Saving Energy at Home with Wealden District Council
With autumn here, now is a great time to think about getting any work done to your home to help save energy and keep warm over winter. "The recent talk of rising fuel prices makes it more important to think about how you can reduce your energy bills," explains John Proctor, Wealden District Council's Home Energy Efficiency Officer. "The good news is there are lots of easy things you can do for free that will save you money"
· If you have not defrosted your freezer recently then defrosting it can help it run better and save you money.
· Turn off electrical devices at the plug rather than using standby. Turning things off and similar small changes at home could save over £30 a year.
· Dry your washing outside when the weather permits rather than using the tumble dryer. Around 30% of people still use a tumble dryer when they could dry clothes outside for free!
Loft and cavity wall insulation can also make a big difference to home energy bills. Around 35% of heat from a home is lost from the walls and up to 25% can be lost through the roof. Loft insulation can save around £70 a year, and cavity wall insulation up to £100 a year off your energy bills.
There are a number of grants available to help insulate your home. Call Wealden District Council’s Home Energy Hotline for advice on 01323 443321
· Discounted cavity wall and loft insulation is available to almost everyone
· Depending on age or income, you may be entitled to free loft and cavity wall insulation (depending on the size of the property)
· If you are on benefits, you can receive up to £2,700 for replacing broken down heating systems with energy efficient models.
· If you are over 60 you can get £300 off the cost of replacing a broken down heating system
