Although there was a westerly wind and light drizzle thousands of people enjoyed the annual firework and musical display at Goldsmiths Recreation Ground this year.

There were three negative comments, which of course will be taken into account during planning subsequent years events, the Town Council has received a great deal of verbal, telephone and email support of the display this year, which was provided by Pyro Vision (formerly Fawkes Fireworks).

The following is a selection of the comments received:

 “Best ever”… “Music was fantastic” {young lady who came to the office}

I just wanted to contact you to say how marvelous the fireworks were last night at Goldsmiths. I've been coming to Crowborough fireworks for a few years and I thought it was the best show yet. The musical accompaniment (although a little too loud!) really made it such an exciting display. My husband was particular impressed by the mini fire bombs!  Thank you for putting on a great community event and I hope lots of money was raised for the charities. {CT}

Hi to who it may concern, I have just got home … after attending the Firework Display… I went last year too, but this year I have to say was THE BEST I have ever seen, the music and the mixture with fireworks going off to the excellent music was superb, I do not ever e-mail councils for there great service, but you deserve it, well done, please let who is responsible know that they are doing a extra wonderful job, well done again, {GP}

Hi.  Could you please pass this onto the relevant person.  We went to the fireworks display again this year, it was fantastic.  The best so far.  What a good idea to do it to music.  Thanks again for putting this on every year. (NS)

  • Thanks are given to all who made donations, and this year the total toward the Mayor's Charities Hospice in the Weald Crowborough Link and Alzheimer’s Local Branch was £2,156.64.

The first meeting was a great success. 20 members of the public attended plus The Mayor, District & Town Councillors and staff from the Town Council. The Ranger Emma Newman gave an interesting presentation about The Friends, followed by a question and answer session.  This was followed by elections where seven members of the public were elected to form the committee of the Friends of Crowborough Country Park.  This included Barry Kemp as Chairman and Pat Arnold as Secretary.  Attendees were treated to a glimpse of life in the Park from Barry who brought along some wonderful baby toads.

 Sat 15th Nov, Bowles Activity Centre

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home has joined up with Southern FM’s Help a Local Child to present the exhilarating ‘Hero for a Day’ event. This brand new charity initiative, sponsored by Carpenter Box accountants, takes place on Saturday 15th November at Bowles outdoor activity centre in Crowborough. The challenge is to take part in 5 adrenaline-fuelled activities! By taking part both children (over 9) and adults will help raise vital funds for two of Sussex’s best-loved charities - Help a Local Child and the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home for physically disabled ex-Servicemen and women.

Up to the challenge? In order to receive a prestigious medal and certificate, participants will need to complete 5 activities at the picturesque Bowles outdoor activity centre which include:

·         Rock climbing – on natural sandstone ideal for both the novice and experienced climber

·         Zip wire – fly through the air for the ultimate adrenaline rush!

·         Abseiling – descend 15m from spectacular sandstone rocks

·         Trapeze – the infamous leap from a 15m high platform to the trapeze!

·         Ski Slope in Doughnuts!

Other less strenuous activities will also be on offer, and some including the zip wire and abseiling can be adapted for wheelchairs.

The event is timed to take place near Armistice Day, 90 years after the end of the First World War. We need people to join in, be a hero for the day and raise money for some truly remarkable people. All you need to do to get involved is pay a small registration fee (£5 for children, £20 for adults) and get everyone you know to sponsor you (Minimum sponsorship - £20 for children, £100 for adults). To register go to www.southernfm.com/charity or call Tina Ellis on 01903 218444.

Carpenter Box LLP - leading chartered accountants and tax advisors based in Worthing are delighted to be main sponsor and supporter of the event.

Help a Local Child

Southern FM’s charity, Help a Local Child was launched in 2003 with a commitment to helping Sussex children and young people up to the age of 18 who experience the negative effects of poverty, abuse, neglect, homelessness, violence, crime, illness and disability.

Their focus is local fundraising, with all money raised being awarded locally and really benefiting the community. They organise lots of entertaining fundraising events throughout the year and hope that with the help and support of Southern FM DJs, listeners, local celebrities, corporate partners, volunteers, and of course Southern FM employees, they will help more and more children in the area, enabling them to achieve dreams and ambitions they would never have thought possible.

At a recent meeting of the West Kent Sunday Football League Crowborough Town FC were presented with the trophy for 'Club of the Year 2007/8'.  The Club had already won the 'Sportsmanship Trophy' and the 'Club Linesman of the Year Award' and this completed a unique treble. The 'Club of the Year' award reflects the player's discipline throughout the season both on and off the field of play (for both the 1st Team and the 2nd team), the endeavours of the management when greeting match officials and opponents, and their attention to detail on all administrative tasks. In the League Chairman's words 'the Club gets everything right, absolutely spot-on, both on and off the field." The Club have carried the good name of the Town for sixteen years and this award reflects their awareness that do so with pride, and with care."

There was an air of anticipation at Goldsmiths as over 70 men, women and children, some with very happy dogs in tow, gathered together for the registration and the start of the 10 mile annual boundary walk.   The Deputy Town Mayor, Philip Fermor, welcomed us all and after a short prayer, and wishing us good walking and we set off in great spirits with the

Hi Weald Walkers heading us in the right direction!  As we walked at very varying paces through the  beautiful countryside, surveyed the views, delighted at the spring flowers in the woods, the flowing rivers and the  forest  with its almost fluorescent yellow gorse,  it was hard not to be in awe of the wonderful area we live in.   After a morning of walking in the almost perfect weather and for some, a quick detour via the Coopers Arms  we arrived back at Goldsmiths, and  were  presented with well deserved certificates for completing the course by Cllr Chantelle Wilson.   It may well be true to say there were a few aching muscles towards the end, but there was no doubt it was an experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all!   Many thanks to all those who helped to make it such a successful event.
