I was born in 1940 at Stockton on Tees but was brought up after the war in Esher, Surrey. I went to London University where I obtained a degree in civil engineering. After university I worked for consultants and the Department of Environment before joining Anglian Water where I worked for 22 years.
I moved to Cambridgeshire in 1974 where I lived for 26 years. After a short spell on the Parish Council I represented the village on the Hinchingbrooke School Association with 8 years as Chairman. During this time I was instrumental in persuading the County Council to build a new lower school. I was also Treasurer and Chairman of the Village Hall Trust when it obtained a sizeable grant to rebuild and convert the existing hall into a community centre, much like the one which Crowborough enjoys today.
I moved to Crowborough in 2000 and in 2005 joined a working party set up to advance the building of a Community Centre for Crowborough. The group was successful in obtaining a lottery grant and work was completed on a brand new Community centre last year.
I became a Town Councillor in 2007 and have served as Chairman of the Sports, Recreation and Cemetery committee for 5 years. I was elected as Crowborough’s Deputy Mayor for 2012.
Over the years I have served on many committees at national and local levels and have considerable experience of working for and with Government Departments and Councils at all levels.
My active days of Rugby, Dinghy sailing, Hockey, Cricket and Squash are over. I am a supporter of the Crowborough Players and enjoy the theatre. I play bridge with the Crowborough Bridge Club and am a member of the Crowborough Probus club. I also enjoy golf and play regularly at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club.
I am married to Marion who will be serving the Town as Mayoress for the year. We have two children and four grandchildren.
My chosen charities this year are the Sussex High Weald Dementia Social Group, a local charity that is run entirely by volunteers who give their time to support those with dementia and the Meningitis Research Foundation.
